Fall’s Green Tomatoes

Tomato plants
      Are vines.

Make no mistake—
      In fall they leave

An acrid yellow resin
      On your plucking,
            Prying hands.

They’re slowly ripening fruit
      Leaving their seed to the ground.

You’re only interfering.
